Ancient Superstructures
Synopsis
Aachen Cathedral began as Charlemagne's imperial chapel in 796 and became one of Europe's most influential religious monuments. Inspired by Byzantine architecture, its monumental octagonal dome was the largest built north of the Alps for centuries. Constructed with recycled Roman stones and an innovative brick-infused mortar that ensured exceptional durability, the structure was designed to last for eternity.
